Filter by these if you want a narrower list of alternatives or looking for a specific functionality of Inkscape. Inkscape alternatives are mainly Vector Graphic Apps but may also be Digital Painting Tools or Image Editors. That being said, I absolutely agree with you that the skills transfer, and so the open source options are a great way to break in before you're doing a lot. Other interesting Online alternatives to Inkscape are Corel Vector, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Boxy SVG and SVG-Edit. Krita covers a lot of where GIMP fails, but definitely has more slowness and rough patches than Photoshop. The cost is negligible compared to the benefit if you use it professionally. Not that Inkscape, GIMP, and video editors like Olive aren't usable, but I simply don't see why a professional would ever prefer them over what Adobe offers. However, when it comes to video editing, photo editing, and vector graphics, I unfortunately have to admit that for any professional level of work Adobe is still king. In coding VSCode is quite good, especially for web dev, and really only the JetBrains IntelliJ-based products have any significant edge over it, and it's a very slight, arguable edge. It depends a lot on the area, Blender for example is excellent and in a decent number of areas superior to its paid counterparts, and it's particularly impressive for how much of an all-in-one tool it is.
